When is a consultancy not a consultancy?

I’ve always been sheepish when calling myself a consultant! Why? My perception of a consultant is a big-wig who rocks up to site, does a bit of work, chats to a few managers, writes a massive report (of which 95% is generic stuff, and 98% never gets read) and finishes up by sending a massive bill! Sound familiar?

Even with our ‘consultancy’ arm, we’ve always tried to keep it real. Simple, succint reports, reasonable rates, customised services to meet the clients needs and budget. We’d prefer to work with our clients, not just for them!

And then there’s the issue of credibility with the troups…but that’s for the next blog!

Outsourcing OSH responsibility

I had an interesting conversation with a client-to-be this morning, where the question was raised – who is responsible for the OSH of my employee/contractor when they’re on a client/customer site?

The old adage is true – everyone is responsible for OSH!  The employee is required to follow procedures/systems, identify and report hazards, participate in OSH programs, use equipment and PPE appropriately etc.  Employers have to provide a safe place and safe systems of work.  So where to contractors fit in?

Contractors certainly have accountabilities as an employer to their own workers.  However, contractors can reasonably expect their client to provide a safe workplace and safe systems of work.

There is a belief, a hang-up from the ‘old days’, that you can outsource your OSH responsibilty by using contractor labour.  However, legislation has plugged any holes that may have existed in the past.  For specialised work, using contractors is often the key, but don’t be fooled into thinking you can simply ‘outsource’ OSH accountability associated with their work.

Why am I blogging?

OK, I’m fairly new to the blogging scene.  I’ve hearing about it for years, but never quite got what the fuss is about!  So where does blogging fit in with Fresh Risk Solutions and OSH Boss?  My blogs should not be taken literally, as will tend to be generic in nature and some what vague, to protect the client/industry I’m discussing.  Rather, I see blogging as an opportunity to share some of my thoughts and experiences with members and anyone else who’s interested.  By collecting these thoughts, and writing them down, some may actually make it to the next level – Action!  OSH Boss, as a concept, has been in my head for years, but is only evolving to something meaningful now.  I must confess that between Simon and I, we have some amazing ideas – but we discuss them then move on.  By blogging, the resulting action may be to create a plan or at least catch ideas in our ‘dream catcher’ to review later.  Or I may just be letting off steam….we’ll see!
